Judging by the layers used in this tutorial, it really contradicts your "How to Simplify" tutorial. :XD:

I've never heard of the golden ratio (sigh - I love American public schools and their lack of care), so this tutorial really opened my eyes a bit! Absolutely love it. Thank you so much for posting this!

Nice tutorial on how to go about doing a detailed image! I think I already knew most of the techniques you mention individually, but seeing it all put together like that is useful to get an overall picture of it.

You're not using the Golden Ratio there, though -- if you squish it, it is no longer technically the Golden Ratio and mathematicians will be mad at you. :P But as I mention in my composition tutorial, that doesn't really matter: you're still using the basic idea, and it doesn't make much difference if you use golden vs thirds vs squished version or whatever.

Yeah i dont know much about the golden ratio. Soooo does this mean if have a square canvas i cant use it? Your tutorial is amazing btw

Correct, technically speaking, you can't fit it into a square canvas -- it must be a canvas of the Golden Ratio.

HOWEVER: if you're just using it as a composition guide, what's happening is that you're using it for its leading lines and how you should concentrate detail, and there you don't really need mathematical precision. Though, if you squish it too much, it does become something different and I guess it might not work as well.

Thanks for the compliment. ^^

Thank you! Yeah i thought i would be better at it if i made the tutorial while i was drawing the picture. It helped but i had to spend a whole day after to clean up the layout, fix the spelling and add some information.

The golden ratio, if I'm not mistaken is a very optimal number, optimisation contributes to success and success has always been desirable. Nature displays the ratio because it works, and in entities that can identify the pattern even on a passive level, those ones who find the ratio desirable will also be more drawn to a more optimal counterparts. So I figure it exists because of it's high functionality, and we have been developed in an environment that encouraged the appreciation of that functionality.
